A look around first, the chair later

At DentalZuid your child can walk around the practice first. We explain what we do in words that suit their age. Dental care up to age 18 is covered by basic health insurance.

The first visit is mostly looking

A treatment room is full of new things: a chair that goes up, a lamp, a small mirror. That takes a moment to get used to. Your child walks around first and presses the chair button themselves.

Then they sit in it, usually with you beside them. We count the little teeth together. A first visit can be short. What matters is that your child wants to come back.

What we do with children

We watch how the teeth grow and change, and we show how to keep them clean. Preventing cavities is easier than filling them.

Learning to brush, together with you

Daan, Lotte or Aylin shows how your child brushes. Your child brushes first, then you go over the teeth. Sometimes we colour the plaque so you can see where it stays. We also talk about food, drink and fluoride.

Care that fits the age

At a check-up we look at the teeth and molars. If it is needed, we remove plaque, apply fluoride or protect a new adult molar with a thin coating. We do no more than necessary.

From baby teeth to adult teeth

Baby teeth need care too. A broken baby tooth can hurt and make eating and sleeping hard. So we keep an eye on things from the first tooth, and we keep looking while the teeth change.

How an appointment goes

Every child is different. We plan extra time so nobody has to rush.

  1. Looking around

Your child walks through the room, moves the chair up and down and sees the instruments. We say what each one does.
  2. Counting and looking

We look in the mouth and count the teeth. If something feels odd to your child, we stop for a moment.
  3. Brushing and prevention

You and your child hear how brushing can improve. If something needs protecting, we explain what we will do first.
  4. Coming back

If it goes well, we book the next appointment. If your child needs more time, we split the visit into smaller steps.

My six-year-old son was terrified of the dentist. Here he could look at everything first and lower the chair himself. Now he asks when we are going again.

Your child sets the pace

One child climbs straight into the chair. Another wants to look around three times first. Both are fine. We force nothing and we never talk over your child’s head.

Has your child never seen a dentist, or had an unpleasant visit? Come anyway. We start with getting acquainted and only then do something in the mouth. Read more about support for dental anxiety.

Hearing what happens, beforehand

If something does need doing, your child hears what is coming first, in short sentences. For example: “You will hear a soft hum soon. That is the brush cleaning the tooth.”

We work in small steps and wait when your child wants to ask something. You can stay in the room. A good visit is one where your child goes home without worries.

Come even without complaints

Do not wait until your child is in pain. When a child starts young, the practice becomes an ordinary place. We also notice sooner if something changes. You can register your child as a new patient.

Up to age 18, dental care is in the basic insurance

Dental care for children under 18 is covered by basic health insurance. You do not need a supplementary dental insurance for it.

There are exceptions. Orthodontics, such as braces, is not covered by basic insurance. Not sure whether something is covered for your child? Ask us before the appointment. See also the tariffs.
