In pain or had an accident? How to get help fast
With severe pain, a broken tooth or bleeding that will not stop, you want to know right away who to call. That depends on how serious it is.

Who do you call?
Life-threatening
A serious injury to your face or jaw, swelling that makes it hard to swallow or breathe, or bleeding you cannot get under control? Call 112.
Not life-threatening
Call your own dentist. Outside opening hours, their recorded message tells you which dental emergency service is on duty in your region. No dentist of your own? Search for ‘tandarts spoed’ and the name of your town.
When is it an emergency?
These problems cannot wait for a regular appointment:
- A tooth that is loose, knocked out or broken after a fall or a blow
- Bleeding after a treatment that does not stop after half an hour of pressure
- Pain so severe that painkillers do not help
- A swollen cheek or swelling in your mouth, especially with a fever
Tooth knocked out?
Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Put it in a cup of milk and go to a dentist straight away: the sooner, the better the chance it can go back. A child’s baby tooth is not put back, but do have your child checked.
If you go to an emergency service, bring your health insurance card and ID.
